Heating in your home is important when the cold weather sets in, but can be dangerous if your heating source is not properly used or maintained. Be comfortable and have peace of mind with the following tips:
- When using a space heater, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. As a general rule, place electrical and liquid fuel powered space heaters at least 36 inches away from the combustible items. Never leave a space heater switched on when you are leaving the house or while going to bed. It’s also dangerous to dry wet mittens or other clothing on your space heater.
- Liquid Fuel Powered Space Heater should use only recommended fuels. Never substitute gasolene or any other fuel. Before refilling always turn off the heater and wait until it cools down. If you have the plan to buy a kerosene heater, you must inform the fire deportment.
- If your home has a fire place, have the chimney inspected and cleaned by the professional every winter. Creosote build up in chimneys can cause a fire if the chimney is not properly cleaned. Use a spark-resistent screen and ash guard when burning wood.
- Remember to burn only dry seasonable hardwood. Never burn coal, it burns to high temperature. Keep burning materials away from the fireplaces. If you are purchasing factory-built fireplace, select one that is approved by an independent testing laboratory.
- If you use a wood stove, chimney connections and flues should be checked at the beginning of each heating season. Also remove cool ashes.
- If you use propane gas for head, you must use a cylinder that bears the approval mark of a testing agency that is approved in your state. If your cylinder looks problematic and performs bad, then have it checked by the qualified repair person.
Water heaters also require little maintenance and should be checked once in a year. If you have a gas water heater pay special attention to the flue area. If the heater runs on electricity, check the loose wiring.
